Arthritis - Silent Pain

Although not usually life-threatening, arthritis causes your horse pain and can be career-ending. In fact, a research report from Michigan State University's McPhail Equine Performance Center calls degenerative joint disease the single most common cause of early retirement for sport horses.

Scientists are working hard on several studies that might eventually present realistic solutions for actually reversing the arthritis process--regenerating cartilage and synovial fluid through modern miracles such as gene therapy. While awaiting such exciting developments, you don't have to sit back and watch your horse suffer. Arthritis can be managed now. Using a multi-pronged approach, you can improve the affected joint's range of motion, reduce pain and inflammation, and significantly slow the degeneration process, resulting in a comfortable horse with a prolonged performance career.

Rebecca graduated from Queensland University in 1998 with Honours. She started at Canberra Veterinary Hospital in 1998 and is particularly interested in equine performance and lameness problems. Rebecca is currently studying to sit her Membership exams for the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists (ACVSc) in the field of Equine Dentistry.

 

She is our media vet and has had many starring roles on Animal Hospital. She can also be heard on ABC radio on Saturday mornings, offering veterinary advice. She is a very experienced horse rider and competitor, particularly in the field of dressage.

 

Rebecca has a Rhodesian Ridgeback x Viszla called Lilly. Bec also owns several dressage horses that eat expensive food and wear expensive coats and shoes.

Mark joined Canberra Equine Hospital as a Managing Partner and Specialist Equine Surgeon in January 2002 and his interests include all aspects of equine surgery and lameness.

As a result of his advanced surgical training and success in examinations, Mark is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. This qualification is highly regarded downunder and has allowed Mark to register as a Specialist in Equine Surgery in Australia and New Zealand. Mark was awarded a Master’s degree by the University of Sydney in 1997. Mark is a Member of the Australian College of Veterinary Scientists by examination in Equine Surgery, and he became a Fellow of the Australasian College of Biomedical Scientists in 2007.

Mark is a leader within the veterinary profession. He has served on the Policy Council of the Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) and on the Committee of the Australian Veterinary Practice Management Association. Currently, Mark is the President of the ACT Division of the AVA and also the President of the Australian Veterinary Business Association.

Mark is a committed family man and with his wife, Sally, they manage the hectic lives of four children, two dogs, two cats and numerous goldfish.
