Do they ever! They seem to remember everything that happens to them. That's one reason they are so trainable. What you teach a horse today, they will remember tomorrow. The more you reinforce it, the more it will stay in their memory until finally, it will be ingrained for life.
The great equine memory is one reason older horses tend to make such wonderful riding companions. All the experiences they have gleaned stays with them. They remember things, such as rubbish bins on the trail are harmless and people often hand out carrots. They also remember that behaving well while being ridden pleases the rider. Just like humans, horses digest and remember encounters they have, good or bad, and add them to their life experiences.
Of course, this terrific equine memory can backfire on humans. If a horse has a bad experience, they remember it. Then you have to spend a lot of time trying to get them to forget it.
